He's 9 and doesn't get an allowance, he gets want he needs.
This all started with this: http://www.soleflormom.com/2008/02/should-a-9-years-old-have-a-cell-phone/
To have a plan with unlimited text messages we have to pay a certain amount monthly and that's too expensive. At home he used free messages through the computer, he just has to be careful with his "not necessary" phone calls during the day. I hope he gets that soon.

I guess spending two weeks without any money in the cell phone, at least will make him more aware that spend everything equal to: no phone money. He has 28cents now, meaning if he makes a phone call he won't be able to make any more calls or send messages. Let's see how it works.

I'm not a parent, but I can totally relate to your situation because I was just like your son when I was his age.
I'm curious, does he get an allowance? Have you considered getting a cell phone plan with unlimited text messaging? Do you feel that you are giving in to his obsession of frivolously using the cell phone if you do?
I am a bit surprised that you let a 10 year old have a cell phone, but that's a whole different topic of discussion. I know that my 10 year old niece and nephew don't have their own cell phones and that their parents could easily afford to get them for them.

If I knew how to teach children about $$, I would write a book. My son, who is now 18, is a spendthrift. We had a family plan for cell phone. He went over, used over 1000 minutes each month. I was paying $300 phone bills. Then he started texting at .10 each.
