FoxFilter – Parental Control Add-on for certain internet content

For quite some time I’ve been looking for a Parental Control filter for my Desktop. Both my kids use the computer and I’m always afraid they might see content not suitable for their age. DH uses it too and I must confess that I found out that he watches some adult content and two weeks ago I got really mad about it. Although I know most men like to watch that type of content I’m not very comfortable with that AND the main point is the URL’s that stay in the Firefox history that by mistake can be seen by my kids.

Well, I decided it was time to get rid of unappropriated content and I started looking the web for a Parental Control software. I tried a few softwares I found through internet search but none was working the right way. Than out of nowhere, I came across a Firefox Add-on that does the job and I must say a good job, it’s FoxFilter and it is installed as a regular Firefox extra.

The Firefox Add-on is very simple, it has already a list of words that should be blocked, I added a few more although now I realize that the ones listed were enough. There is the option of putting a password to prevent other users from changing the settings so I put a password and now I’m in charge of the Parental Control.

When someone tries to enter a page with adult content and violence FoxFilter just blocks the page and a black page appears saying the content is blocked. I feel that the add-on is working perfectly and I’m much at ease when my kids use the computer.

As far as my DH reaction…none yet.

Hi Laura, just came across your blog and thought you may want to check out Glubble.
With this free Firefox add-on your children can explore, play and enjoy thousands of fun games, coloring pages, interactive exercises, audio books and puzzles that are all easily pre-approved by you.

As a parent you can create a private Family Page where you can send messages to your children and add grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Upload photos, monitor and support your kids’ online activities, and post family events.

Thanks so much for letting me know about the Glubble site. In a couple of days I’ll write a review of the site.

Thanks for this info. I really need it with a very smart and curious 9 year old using the computer.

My son usually uses the computer for online games but we have to be careful. The trouble is for instance yesterday I was looking in IMDB for “Death Race” movie information and it probably said in the page that it had violent content or similar content and I wasn’t able to view the plot because the page was blocked LOL so…laptop here I come…:)
