Halloween…Portuguese Style
So, how was your Halloween?
In Portugal Halloween is not a tradition but we are getting U.S.A. influences and most schools are adopting the “Witch Day” activities but still without costumes. Costumes are only used for specially organized parties mostly in discos and bars. But for our children the special day is on November 1st.
November 1st is a public holiday and during the morning our children go knocking at every door and ask for cookies or as they say “Pão por Deus” (a rough translation: “Bread by god”) that is a way to say : “bread please”. Children don’t have special costumes, they wear normal clothes, alone or together with friends they go around the city and return home with a bag full of cookies, chocolates, gums, chest nuts, nuts, etc. etc.
Dani went with three friends knocking from door to door and I went alone with Catherine do the same thing. Of course this means a looongggg walk and at the end of the morning everybody is ready to sit in the couch and rest.
In the afternoon we went to the “grandmas”, uncle and a friend house to pick up some more candies.
Guess what DH did during all these mother and son/daughter activities? He went grocery shopping…he has huge patience to stay in shopping lines…
