My son has headaches and migraines

fotos-065For a week now that I’ve been having a hard time with my son, unfortunately for him. After three weeks of a heavy cold, he had a tooth infection and now has been having migraines for one week already.

This last week we went three times to the ER and one time to a private clinic. His headaches and nausea have been causing a lot of changes in our daily schedule. Doctors say it’s nothing to worry about, the headaches he is having are in fact migraines and it’s something he has to live with. He’s taking medication but the interesting thing is that he gets worse when he is in the classroom.

Once he wears eyeglasses there is also the possibility of some lenses graduation adjustments that need to be done, so we checked that possibility. Although the doctor said that the graduation difference was very small, due to headaches, we are going to change the lenses.

Today I got a call from school because he was not feeling ok. We went to the ER at 11.30am and we arrived home at 3pm. I decided to miss work and stay at home with him the rest of the day. He’s not nauseous anymore and only has a light headache. He hasn’t take any medication for more than 8 hours now, and doesn’t reveal stronger pain.

I decided to let him stay in daycare tomorrow instead of going to school and see if being away from the classroom, away from exercises and lessons makes his headaches go away.

Today I felt desperate and exhausted for seeing him in such pain and I had no solution for him. I felt so helpless. I just want my 10 years old “baby” to be fine again.

    Hi Laura,

so glad you found me via twitter. I’m really out of it since my back surgery & have been having trouble keeping up on my blogs, so it was good to see your name again.
On the migraines; does your son’s school have fluorescent lights? I had a history of them around the same age & fluorescent lights are well known to aggravate this problem. Most schools here have them, so going to school can be a major issue.

I know you try very hard to keep your kids’ diets very healthy, but caffeine can be a big help on this front (constricts blood vessels). You may want to try letting him drink a cola to see if that helps at all. (I know it sounds counter intuitive, but it helps me tons.) Don’t know if you’ve tried keeping a food diary for him, but that’s a big thing here; try to see if there are any food’s that might be triggers.

I love that they tell you he just “has to live w/it”. Does he actually throw up from them? Tell him to aim at the dr who told you that, maybe he’ll feel more of a sense of urgency toward helping you then.

I can’t believe how big he’s getting?!? These damn kids w/their growing up!
Hang in there, something will give.
