Oh yes: and don't rely that much on these freelance job boards. The rates they post on these boards tend to be what I like to call "starving rates". This is a general guideline and by no means set in stone, but translators worth their salt usually charge anywhere between $0.08 to $0.16 per word. On these job boards it's rare to find someone willing to pay more than $0.04. It's all about slowly building your clientele.

Hey, I actually work as a freelance English to Portuguese translator from home (in Brazil). An let me tell you, I wouldn't go back to an office even if they offered me twice as much as I make today (not to mention that working from home I'm making more money than I ever made in any office I've worked before).

Anyway... I just came to give you a tip. If you don't know ProZ.com yet, I seriously recommend you check it out. It's basically the central hub for the worldwide translation market on the internet. I specially recommend that you do a lot of reading on their forums - http://www.proz.com/forum.php - LOTS of great advice there on how the market works (generally) and how to get established, etc. It helped me a lot in the beginning.

Good luck!

I'm so sorry to hear about your job loss. I don't know of any translation work, but what about using the time to get more blogging work? I wish you the best.
