Hi Laura,

I am in the same shoes! I was laid off a year ago and have always worked. I am going bonkers at home, believe me! I decided to become active with a local Mommy & Me play group. I came across them on Meetup.com. There are tons of groups listed by area and interests. So I would definitely start there. There is usually no cost to join a group. Also, I looked into local and affordable parks in my area. I too live by the beach and it can be fun, but really a once or twice a week deal for us. My daughter and I just visited a Splash Park here in our area and she met a lot of new little friends and had a blast. There were fountains and water jets everywhere and picnic tables. There was even a playground. Best part...it was free. I would also check into movie theaters. In our town the local Regal Theater hosts a free movie for kids. Movie generally start in the morningaround 10am or 11am, but its free and a great activity for them. I'm all about variety!

Good luck to you. I am following you back from FMBT. :)

Hi Mary, I live in Portugal but I will follow your tip of finding out what is going on in our city and nearby cities.

Jackie has a good impression of your book so I'll take a look at it.

Thank you Jackie for your tips. I guess the "pick a topic" idea is great and I will be able to keep them interested in finding different things for that Topic on that specific day.
Maybe we can do a little topic list and let the kids pick one at random.

Just know that you're not alone in wondering what to do to keep your kids busy. The beauty is that you can do some great searching on the Internet to discover all sorts of places near you that you might not even have thought of that can interest your kids.

For instance, do a search for a City Guide to activities in your area. Heck, I'd even do some research for you if I knew what city you lived near.

And did you know that if you're in the U.S. there is an amazing program set up by bowling alleys where kids can bowl two free games EVERY DAY ALL SUMMER? http://kidsbowlfree.com

And Jackie... thanks so much for plugging my Summer Fun Handbook! :-)

Being willing to provide a few cheap materials and the spark of an idea can keep kids busy all summer long! HAVE FUN!!!!

We read a lot of books ~ :)

What I like even better is reading a book and then having my little one do a project or something related to the book. She's 4 so I can pretty much set her up and get her started with something and it will keep her busy for a while.

We also like to pick a topic say... whales. We look up pictures of the ocean and whales online and then she gets her paints out and paints/colors/draws her own pictures of the whales and oceans.

If you're looking for summer activities a good friend of mine has put together a whole book ~ it's really fantastic and the activities and stuff are things I already have around the house. You might find it really helpful. I know I have a hard time coming up with stuff to keep her busy.

Good luck. This is the first summer Hanna has gone to school and then been out of school. She's been out a couple weeks and is really missing her friends and the interaction. It's getting tougher, but just take it one day at a time. :)
