The new year always brings new projects. This time I’m here to tell you about the Style Network – Before Meets After.

Travel Toys Means Entertained Kids

Having two children of my own I perfectly understand how difficult it is to travel with children on the back seat of the car. After a small amount on the car they become tired of being there and they become very upset.

I always had some trouble to control my oldest son since he becomes seasick when he for instance tries to ready while we are on the road. But one thing is certain, I always used attractive distractions to keep them busy.

When they were younger I used to take travel toys in the car to keep them occupied. Toys could be magnetic boards, rattles, and other noisy toys. As they grew older I started taking puzzles, electronic games, books, UNO game, cards, and so on.

There are some special designers that provide us with the best toys to keep our kids happy and quiet. Melissa and Doug design and manufacture those toys, both educational and fun. They have a wide variety of toys for all ages. Toddlers might be difficult to entertain but bigger kids are not easier.

We should always buy toys that match our kid’s age. A baby might be happy and entertained with baby banz products such as sunglasses and attractive hats while a ten year old will be more interested in a video game or a DVD player with a great movie for his or her age.

Overall the most important thing is to keep the kids entertained while we are driving even if it is a short distance. When there are siblings, travel toys should be in the same number so that there are no fights to dispute a toy. Of course that can always happen , but if each kid has its own toys in the car it will be easy for them to be quiet while playing with their own toys. Cards can be used to keep the kids entertained with each other.

I Love Reading. What About my Kids?

The school routine is in “ACTIVE” mode. The kids are very happy to be back to school, to meet their friends again as well as the teachers. Some kids don’t like the end of summer vacations because they have to get back into the school schedule again, but my kids were excited to go back.

Once I was at home during Summer vacations I guess they felt they were fulfilled when it comes to have mom around. Now that they now I’m doing my best to work from home and keep picking them up at school, they feel very comfortable and serene about going to school.

My daughter went to first degree and she was very, very anxious because she know she will be reading soon. She is already able to read simple sentences with my help and she makes a really hard effort to read by her own.

Our mother language is Portuguese but she is already learning English through Mingoville program. There are some words she already recognizes and she really wants to start reading in English. I have a clever girl…what can I say.

Buying books here in English is not a very usual option specially kids books. So I was checking the Love Reading site and realized that they have a special section for kids books. One of the features I like the most is the specification of the age range, this way we can buy kids books already knowing that they fit our kid’s age.

My son is not so Love Reading style. He doesn’t want to spend time reading and he says that television already has movies and programs and he doesn’t need to read. My problem is that he doesn’t like to study also.

I showed him the Love Reading website and once he is already learning English at school, I explained him that it would be quite interesting for him to start reading in English. Well, he was not very convinced but he said he would think about it.

I’m an avid reader, I have always been. When I had my son’s age we spent little time watching television and I used to read and study a lot. Now I spend most of my free time online but, if I find a magazine or a newspaper I instantly start reading it. My kids always tell me: “You can’t see a magazine because you start reading it immediately.

Tomorrow it will be Pool Park Day

Tomorrow we are planning a trip to a Pool Park with tubes, slides and big pools. The kids are so excited. I also invited my niece and nephew to come with us because their parents are working and they can have fun with us. We have to take two cars but that’s just fine, we just want the kids to have fun.

I can’t forget to take the camera along with us!!

Family Movie: Nanny PcPhee Returns

My kids have been asking me to go to the movies for quite some time, so I decided to choose an interesting movie and the three of us went to the Cinema (daddy at work…).

So, we went to watch Nanny McPhee Returns. We had already seen the first Nanny McPhee for several times at home and they were really excited to watch the second movie.

This time, Nanny McPhee arrives to help a harried young mother who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war, though she uses her magic to teach the woman’s children and their two spoiled cousins five new lessons.

I found the movie quite interesting and helpful when it comes to teaching the kids five essential rules:

Stop Fighting
Learn to Share
Work Together
Be Brave
Have Faith

I have been teaching my kids these rules since they were little so it was quite impressive to see that expressed in a movie. They were also excited to see what was going to disappear next on Nanny’s face.

For those who don’t know, Nanny helps families in trouble when it comes to make the kids follow rules. When she arrives she has five special things on her face and each of one will disappear each time the kids follow one of the rules.

Nanny Mcphee special mote is: I’ll be around when you think you don’t need me and I will be gone when you want me to stay.

This is an excellent movie to be watched by the entire family.

One of the great features of this movie this time was that it was doubled to Portuguese (our language) so my youngest was able to appreciate the movie at its fullest.

Carnaval (Carnival) Costumes

What the hell is that? It is what you are thinking, isn’t it?

Well, in Portugal it is Carnival (Carnaval for us. Last Friday children went with their costumes to school and this photo shows my kids costumes.

Usually from Friday to Tuesday the kids and adults put on their costumes and go to the streets or local parties. This year, specially in the district where we live, the weather ruined most of the schedule parades but at least Friday children were happy on their costumes. For the record: my daughter was a Spanish girl and my son was…at least he said…he was a Rock Star.

I am addicted to online games

Due to the amount of stress I’ve been going through I have been wasting too much time with online games istead of blogging. First it was the TribalWars now it is Snods from twitter. I’m aware that I’m losing precious time but guess what…I like playing those games.

My favorite series: Criminal Minds

Yesterday I saw the last episode of my favorite series. Criminal Minds is a series I love and I’ve seen all episodes since season one.

Profiling is something I do on my daily life, it’s not my job, but I use it to understand why people I work with act like that act and specially what how they react to something I might say.

It’s not easy to profile someone without special skills but along the four seasons of the Criminal Minds series, I’ve learned some ways to identify certain gestures, sentences and face expressions. Knowing a little bit about human behavior is great because, in my case, I like to be a step ahead of my bosses and co-workers.

I hope Agent Hochner will be alive on Season 5.

A collection of gadgets

My son is very fond of gadgets. He loves his Play Station Portable, MP3, Nintendo Gameboy, CD Player, mini laptop and PS2 (I believe I didn’t forget any). Oh yes, he loves his mobile phone. MP4 or ipods are not part of his gadget collection.

I thing this is a overwhelming collection and it has up to be too much for him. He has difficulty in deciding what to use and he tend to neglect some of them. Some of the gadgets were gifts from family members so I don’t feel guilty for the number of gadgets he has.

His mini laptop is right now his treasure possession. He loves to play on line and chat with his friends. I want him to learn English (for us it is our foreign language) but he is not motivated for that right now. He is a little lazy but I am showing him that English is a must-to-know language and that we need it even to know game rules and orders. I guess this summer he is going to have some lessons at home.

Desperate Housewives: one of my favorite tv series

Desperate Housewives is one of my favorite TV series. I have been following the series from day one and I don’t miss an episode.

Last year it was a strike that made the season shorter, this season it’s the recaps and flashbacks that are getting on the way.

Last week it was Edie death and back memories. Although back memories can be interesting, I am always looking for new story developments and I end up stuck in time and hoping the new episode comes soon.

I took the poll in Desperate Housewives site to see which Desperate Housewife I am and, for my surprise, I am Gabrielle. I always saw me as Lynette, a mom, worker, housewife, well, I was wrong.

My son’s mini Laptop was delivered today. It has a new screen and it’s like it was before. My son is SO HAPPY to have it back but…I guess he didn’t learn the lesson and insists in taking it to school tomorrow.

I’m playing Tribal Wars

My son drove me into playing Tribal Wars. He loves the game and wanted me to join. I must confess I was not very attracted to the game because I think thought it was very boring. He ended up forcing me to sign up and now I’m playing Tribal Wars every day.

Basically Tribal Wars is like the name says, war between tribes, however before the wars come the construction of a village that takes weeks to be ready. There are several buildings that must be built and we only can build them with the resources we gain from the wood, clay and iron. We have to strategically build our village by using the resources available and at the same time build a defensive strategy to keep invaders away.

I only have to sign in two times a day to see if I have enough resources to build or improve some of the buildings and get new troops and weapons. I’m really having a defensive strategy and right now I don’t have any troops therefore they won’t die if my village is attacked.

This game is not very much my style, I prefer action games but in a time of crisis and money saving is interesting to see how I manage the resources on this Tribal War game. Once I get a certain number of points I will be able to conquer other villages. Uau…I can’t wait for it.
