We have two new pets at home, two beautiful parrots that came to join our other pets: two turtles.

I had no intention to have more pets especially of those that make noise and dirt. It all happened on a sunny day when my kids where in the pool on the backyard, I was indoors and my husband near the pool. Suddenly a parrot just fell into our backyard, coming from nowhere, and my husband picked it up.

My first thought was: this parrot must belong to a neighbor, so I just knock at my neighbors doors but it seemed that no one had parrots. Oh Boy…what was I going to do with the bird?

I went to a neighbors house who has a canary and asked her if she had a spare cage. She didn’t but she managed to divide in two the cage she had and we put the parrot there.

As my father had a lot of canaries in the past, I went to my parent’s house and brought one cage to my house. After the Parrot was inside the cage with food and water we were able to admire it. It was so beautiful, several tones of green, no injuries, it was perfect and the kids were quite excited to have it.

A few days later it was Children’s Day and our gift to the kids was a brand new Blue Parrot. They were thrilled and so do I.

Now that my next door neighbors packed up their Camping tents and went camping for a week, during the day I have nothing but silence (from humans) and I’m able to enjoy the singing of the parrots.

The parrots love to be outside where they hear other birds singing and although sometimes they really make a lot of noise, I love them.

As you can see in the photo, we already have a parrot’s nest. Why? Because we have a female and a male (at least we where told so) and we are thrilled to see the new baby parrots this couple is going to have.

These are our new pets. Every year we have them at home usually brought by my son’s hands although my husband and I have to take care of their feeding. We have sixty silkworms and they are in a shoe box. The more we feed them the faster they grow so I believe in two weeks they will start to build their cocoons.

Of course we don’t use the silk to make clothes, area rugs or other silk products but I have already told my kids how this silk can be used to build beautiful and expensive products.

The metamorphose process is a little difficult to explain and my daughter keeps asking about it over and over again. Let’s be realistic, a worm that builds up a cocoon, stays inside for quite some time and than just turns into a moth is not easy to explain, not even to a grown up not to mention a five years old.

Although we check and feed them at least twice a day, they are more an hobby than a pet. It’s great to see them grow everyday and I believe that for kids it is an interesting experience.

Every two weeks we have our turtle aquarium cleanup. As you can see from the photo the water gets really dirty due to food leftovers (you can see a few in the photo) and other “leftovers”.

The water has to be removed with a manual vacuum or as we do now, with a water vacuum cleaner. We just suck the water out of the aquarium, clean the glass with paper towels and we fill it with water again.

What I like in Turtles is the quiet and hair free environment they create. They don’t jump on us,they don’t lick our face and they don’t fill our clothes with hair. However they show me they know who I’m. As soon as I arrive home and start calling them at least one (the not shy one) starts swimming around the aquarium, gets near the glass and just moves its feet until I go near the aquarium. This particular Turtle likes to be fed by hand.

Although it’s not a beautiful reptile I believe it’s a great pet for kids especially those suffering from allergies.
